The Journal Cover I Choose to Grow Old With
There are certain purchases that require more thought than others.
Not because they’re expensive. Not because they’re rare. But because they will become part of your daily life.
For the past several months, I've been trying to decide what journal cover would accompany my everyday journal. This isn't just any notebook. It’s become a record of ordinary days and memorable moments. Inside are journal entries, sketches, photographs, ticket stubs, random observations, and reflections I jot down throughout the day. It’s part diary, part commonplace book, part creative workshop.
In many ways, it’s become a small archive of life.
Because of that, I knew I wanted something special to protect it.
After considering various options, I eventually settled on the Galen Leather Slim A5 Notebook Cover in Crazy Horse Brown.
And I haven't regretted the decision for a moment.
The Crazy Horse Brown leather is a personal favorite.
Choosing Things That Age Well
One of the reasons I was drawn to this particular cover is that it embraces something our modern culture often ignores: aging.
Most products today are designed to remain unchanged. We expect them to look the same on day one as they do on day one thousand.
Leather has other ideas.
The Crazy Horse Brown leather from Galen develops a patina almost immediately. Small marks appear. The color shifts. The surface changes as it encounters life.

Some might see these as imperfections.
I see them as evidence.
Evidence that an object is being used.
Evidence that it is accompanying someone through real days rather than sitting untouched on a shelf.
The cover already carries a few marks that weren't there when it arrived. A scratch from being tossed into my bag. A slight darkening where my hand naturally rests when I open it.
Those details make it mine.
No two covers will ever age exactly alike, and that may be my favorite thing about it.
The Value of Tactile Things
I spend much of my professional life in a digital world.
Screens. Notifications. Endless streams of information.
Perhaps that's why I continue to find myself drawn back toward analog tools.
A fountain pen.
A notebook.
A vinyl record.
A printed photograph.
Good leather belongs on that list.
Here you can see the wonderful patina of the Crazy Horse Brown compared to other leathers (from my collection of Travelers Notebooks and Galen Pen Pouch)
Every time I pick up this journal cover, I'm reminded that physical objects have a language of their own. The softness of the leather. The subtle texture beneath my fingertips. The slight weight it adds to the notebook. Even the familiar scent that greets me whenever I open it.
None of those things improve productivity.
Yet somehow they improve the experience.
And experience matters.
When I sit down to record a moment from the day, sketch an idea, or paste in a photograph, the act feels more intentional. The leather cover becomes part of a small ritual. Open the cover. Uncap the fountain pen. Pause for a moment. Pay attention.
The journal becomes more than a place to store words.
It becomes a place to notice life.

Why Galen Leather?
Part of the appeal is the product itself.
But part of it is the people behind it.
I've long admired the story of Galen Leather. Founded by a two person team in Turkey with a humble hobby making small leather goods, the company has built a reputation among writers, fountain pen enthusiasts, artists, and journal keepers by focusing on craftsmanship rather than trends.
In an age when many brands seem determined to become larger, faster, and more automated, Galen feels refreshingly human.

You can sense that human touch in the stitching, the finishing, and the attention to detail.
More importantly, you can feel it in the way the company approaches its customers and community.
There is a warmth to the brand that is increasingly rare.
Perhaps that is why so many people become loyal supporters once they experience one of their products.
I know I'm becoming one of them.
A Companion for the Journey
The older I get, the more I appreciate objects that invite long-term relationships.
Not everything needs to be optimized.
Not everything needs to be upgraded.
Some things are worth keeping.
This journal cover will likely outlast the notebook currently inside it. And the next one. And probably several after that.
The leather will continue to soften.
The patina will deepen.
The marks and scratches will accumulate.
And hopefully, so will the stories contained within the journals it protects.
That is what I find most appealing about it.
The cover is not the point.
The life recorded inside is.
But good tools have a way of encouraging meaningful habits. They invite us back. They make us want to sit down and write. They help transform ordinary moments into lasting memories.
For me, this Galen Leather cover has become one of those tools.
And if I'm being honest, I suspect it won't be my last piece from Galen Leather.
Some objects earn a place in your daily life.
A select few become companions.
This one feels like it’s well on its way.
